Harry Specht Endowed Community Service Award

Scholarship Description:

Harry Specht (1929-1995) inspired a retired social worker to create the award for the social work students of Metropolitan State University to encourage aspiring social workers to consider work in community-based social care.

Award amounts range from $1000-$2000.

Eligibility Criteria:

Be officially admitted to Metropolitan State University by scholarship application deadline date
Be a declared Social Work major
Be registered for classes the semester(s) in which funds are applied
Must be Junior or Senior who have not completed the Senior Practicum
Must submit an essay
Complete “Student Certification and Consent” form
Essay Topic:

Please submit an essay (minimum of 250 words) to this application form answering the following essay questions/topics:

Write a critical estimate of your understanding of Specht’s thoughts in areas like community-based social care, as well as, education-based social services and community organization, his life and work. You can research his work by looking at his last book, Unfaithful Angels, two copies are available at the Metro State Dayton's Bluff Library.
Provide a description of yourself, your experience, and the qualities you possess that make you a candidate for these awards. This statement may include, but is not limited to, academic and career goals, work and class experience, community service, and the significant influences in your life that led you to social work as a career.

Qualifications
Applicant must be a Junior or Senior.
Applicant must not have completed the Senior Practicum.
Applicant must be a Social Work major.
